Every Vedic birth chart, or Kundli, is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born — the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets mapped against the twelve zodiac signs and the twelve houses of life. Vedic astrology (Jyotish) reads this snapshot as a blueprint: it doesn't just describe your personality, it points to your career, relationships, health, and the timing of major life events. Below is a practical guide to the building blocks we use in every birth chart reading — the D1 and D9 charts, nakshatras, planetary degrees, planet–body connections, and the twelve houses.
The D1 Chart (Rashi Chart) — Your Foundation Chart
The D1 chart, also called the Rashi chart, is the master chart of Vedic astrology. It shows exactly where each of the nine planets (the Navagraha) sat within the twelve zodiac signs at your birth, arranged around your Ascendant, or Lagna — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth time and place. Everything else in a reading builds outward from the D1 chart: it's the primary map of your personality, physical body, life direction, and overall potential.
The D9 Chart (Navamsa) — The Chart of Inner Strength
The D9 or Navamsa chart is a harmonic chart derived by dividing each 30° zodiac sign into nine equal parts of 3°20' each. It's considered the second-most important chart after the D1, and it's used to check how strong a planet's promises in the D1 chart actually are, and to look closely at marriage, partnerships, and dharma (life purpose). A planet that looks strong in the D1 chart but falls poorly in the D9 often delivers weaker or more delayed results than the D1 alone would suggest — which is why an accurate reading always cross-checks both charts together rather than relying on the D1 in isolation.
Nakshatras — The 27 Lunar Constellations
Alongside the twelve signs, Vedic astrology divides the zodiac into 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions), each spanning 13°20' of the sky. Every nakshatra is ruled by one of nine planets in a repeating sequence, and each is further divided into four padas (quarters) of 3°20'. Your Moon's nakshatra at birth is especially significant — it's the basis of your Vimshottari Dasha sequence, the planetary period system used to time events in your life, and it adds a layer of detail that sign placement alone can't capture. Two people with the Sun in the same zodiac sign can have quite different temperaments depending on which nakshatra their Sun or Moon falls in.
Degree of Planets — Why Exact Placement Matters
It's not enough to know which sign a planet sits in — the exact degree matters too. Every planet has a specific degree of exaltation (its point of maximum strength) and an opposite degree of debilitation (its point of greatest weakness) within particular signs:
- Sun — exalted at 10° Aries, debilitated at 10° Libra
- Moon — exalted at 3° Taurus, debilitated at 3° Scorpio
- Mars — exalted at 28° Capricorn, debilitated at 28° Cancer
- Mercury — exalted at 15° Virgo, debilitated at 15° Pisces
- Jupiter — exalted at 5° Cancer, debilitated at 5° Capricorn
- Venus — exalted at 27° Pisces, debilitated at 27° Virgo
- Saturn — exalted at 20° Libra, debilitated at 20° Aries
A planet's degree also determines whether it's combust (too close to the Sun and weakened), retrograde, or sitting right at a sign's final degrees (which some traditions treat with extra caution). This is one of the details a computer-generated chart can show you, but interpreting what it actually means for your life is where an experienced reading adds the most value.
Placement of Planets — Sign, House, and the Company They Keep
A planet's effect in your life depends on three things together: the sign it occupies, the house it falls in, and the other planets aspecting or sitting with it. The same Mars placed in the same sign can behave quite differently depending on which house it lands in and whether benefic or malefic planets are influencing it. This is why a proper reading looks at the whole chart as a connected system rather than reading any one placement in isolation.
How the Planets Relate to the Body
In Vedic astrology, each planet governs particular parts and functions of the physical body, and afflictions to a planet can point to areas worth paying extra attention to:
- Sun — heart, bones, and general vitality
- Moon — mind, blood, and the stomach
- Mars — muscles, bone marrow, and blood
- Mercury — skin, nervous system, and speech
- Jupiter — liver, fat tissue, and the thighs
- Venus — reproductive organs, kidneys, and the face
- Saturn — bones, joints, and teeth
- Rahu — associated with the legs and with chronic, hard-to-diagnose conditions
- Ketu — associated with the feet and with subtler, nervous-system-related issues
Beyond individual planets, the chart itself maps onto the body through the twelve houses, moving from the head (1st house) down to the feet (12th house) — which is one reason a birth chart reading is often paired with a palm reading, since palmistry offers a second, physical lens on many of the same life themes.
The Twelve Houses of the Birth Chart
The twelve houses (bhavas) divide your chart into the different arenas of life. Here's what each one governs:
- 1st House (Lagna) — Self, physical body, personality, and general outlook on life
- 2nd House — Wealth, family, speech, and accumulated resources
- 3rd House — Siblings, courage, communication, and short journeys
- 4th House — Home, mother, emotional foundation, and inner peace
- 5th House — Children, creativity, intelligence, and romance
- 6th House — Health, daily work, obstacles, and debts
- 7th House — Marriage, partnerships, and business relationships
- 8th House — Transformation, longevity, shared resources, and the unknown
- 9th House — Luck, higher learning, father, and life philosophy
- 10th House — Career, public status, and karma
- 11th House — Income, gains, friendships, and aspirations
- 12th House — Loss, spirituality, foreign connections, and rest
Reading a birth chart well means weaving all of this together — the D1 and D9 charts, the nakshatra placements, exact planetary degrees, and how each planet sits across the twelve houses — into one coherent picture of a person's life, rather than treating any single piece in isolation.
